UPDATE: With considerable snow pack on the ground and spring rains in the forecast, Minnesota residents once again face the threat of flooding along rivers and tributaries throughout the state. Over the past 20 years, 15 presidentially declared flood disasters have struck the state.

Consumers warned of collections scam March 9, 2010
CONSUMER ALERT! The Minnesota Department of Commerce is warning Minnesotans to beware of e-mails from Experian Portfolio Services of St. Paul informing them that they owe money to an unnamed creditor. The e-mails, which ask consumers to pay their outstanding balances via PayPal, appear to be fraudulent and consumers should not provide any personal information or payment to satisfy the alleged debt.
Iowa ins. co. fined for selling unapproved annuities contracts in MN March 8, 2010
NEWS: The Minnesota Department of Commerce has fined Des Moines, Iowa-based American Equity Investment Life Insurance Co. $275,000 for allegedly selling unapproved annuity contracts in the state of Minnesota. As a result, consumers who purchased the contacts were subject to higher surrender charges and less favorable terms

$2.1 million annuity settlement with Nationwide Life February 3, 2010
NEWS: Five state insurance regulators, including the Minnesota Department of Commerce, have entered into a $2.1 million settlement with Nationwide Life Insurance Co. and Nationwide Life and Annuity Insurance Co. relating to the alleged unsuitable sale of Nationwide Life variable annuities to clients of Kansas-based financial advisory firm, Waddell & Reed Inc. Minnesota's portion of the settlement is $403,577.
Minnesotans reminded to consider flood insurance before snowmelt February 1, 2010
NEWS: With the potential for serious flooding in the Red River, Minnesota and possibly Mississippi river valleys this spring, Governor Pawlenty is reminding Minnesota homeowners to consider purchasing optional flood insurance before the snowmelt and spring rains. Flood damage is not covered under a standard homeowner's policy.
